Friction holds the earring back to the post. During manufacturing the diameter of the post can increase or decrease how tight the earring back is. This friction can eventually get lost or reduced due to wear and tear, as the metal that provides the tension can eventually open up significantly, causing slippage. Also, hair conditioner and body oils that accumulate on the earring post can increase slippage.
Something that you should realize is that friction-type earring backs are prone to falling off.
Either the post or the earring back will lose their grip, and when this happens, you have a limited number of options. If your friction-type earring backs keep falling off, it is highly likely that the friction is gone, and you need to retighten the metal scrolls. Here are the steps to retighten the scrolls.
With a pair of long-nose pliers, grip the outer layer of each of the metal scrolls and twist to the right, to bring the outer part of scrolls inward. Basically, what we want to happen is for the metal scrolls to come closer to each other again. Perform the same twisting motion with the other metal scroll. Check using the earrings to see if the tightening was sufficient.
Also cleaning your earrings on a regular basis will remove body oils and hair products that can cause slippage. This is also a good idea to prevent infection.
Why do my daughter’s earrings keep falling out?
Your daughter’s first ear piercing is one of the important moments of her life. Her continual loss of earrings is not only frustrating to you but to her as well. Here are a few tips to keeping your daughter’s earrings from falling out.
Children run around and play with their friends, so it is not rare to find that your daughter does not have her earrings in until it is too late. One of the most popular reasons why your daughter’s earrings would fall out is if the earrings are loose. Tighten them using the steps above.
Another common reason why earrings fall off is the earrings are being touched too much. Usually, when children get their initial piercing, it is difficult for them to keep their little hands away from their ears. Piercers recommend not touching a new piercing for approximately six to eight weeks. Help your daughter understand the need to not touch the earrings and praise her when she resists the urge.
